MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cold is the super tacky version of MEGA, our most tacky wax. It's a top coat crafted to create a super tacky surface for water under 15°C (59°F), so you stay locked to your board right through the session, from the first duck dive to the last wave in.

Cold water firms wax up. A soft top coat stays tacky when the temperature drops, which is why Cold is our softest grade. Matching your wax to the water is the easiest way to keep your feet where you put them.

When to reach for it in New Zealand. Based on average monthly sea temperatures: all year round at St Clair in Dunedin, April to December at New Brighton and Sumner in Christchurch, and May to November at Lyall Bay in Wellington. North of there, Cold is mostly a midwinter wax: July to October in Taranaki, July to September in Gisborne, and August at Raglan. The Auckland west coast, Northland and the Bay of Plenty stay at 15°C or more on average, so MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cool suits those breaks through winter.

On the road. It's also the grade for Bells Beach and Torquay from June to October, Santa Cruz in every month except September, New Jersey from November to May, and the Outer Banks in North Carolina from December to April. These are monthly averages, so check the water on the day too.

Put it over Sticky Johnson Deluxe Basecoat so the soft top coat has firm bumps to grab onto. Being super soft, it'll melt quickly in a hot car, so park in the shade. Made in New Zealand.

What water temperature is MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cold for?

Under 15°C (59°F). Once the water averages 15–20°C (59–68°F), switch to MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cool.

What's the difference between Deluxe and MEGA 2.0?

Deluxe beads up really well for long-lasting grip. MEGA is our most tacky wax, and MEGA 2.0 is the super tacky version. Both go on over Deluxe Basecoat, so pick the line you like and the grade that matches your water temperature.

Do I need a basecoat under it?

On a hard board, yes. A super soft top coat needs firm bumps underneath to hold onto, or it slides around and wears off faster.

Can I leave Cold on all summer?

Only if you surf somewhere that stays under 15°C, like Dunedin. Most other New Zealand breaks warm past 15°C by summer, and a super soft wax in warmer water ends up a melted mess. Strip it and switch to Cool or Warm.

What is Sticky Johnson wax made from?

Well, it's actually a secret recipe developed over the last 20 years! We can't give away trade secrets but all we can say is it is chemically inert, making it reef safe, made from non-toxic natural minerals, and the world's best surfers have tested it in every condition and think it's the business.

Do I need to use a basecoat before applying surf wax?

A basecoat is highly recommended. Basecoat is a harder wax applied first to create a layer of textured bumps that your temperature-specific top coat grips onto. Without it, your top coat can slide around and wear off faster. Apply Sticky Johnson Basecoat in a crosshatch pattern first, then layer your Cool or Cold wax on top for maximum grip.
