Description

MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cool is the super tacky version of MEGA, our most tacky wax. It's a top coat for water between 15 and 20°C (59–68°F), keeping you stuck to your stick all session long through the in-between months.

It's the middle of the range: firmer than Cold, so it holds up as the water warms, and softer than Warm, so it stays tacky when the water's cooler. For a lot of New Zealand surfers, that makes it the bar you'll reach for through much of the year. These are averages, so if the water feels sharper than usual on the day, MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cold is the softer option.

When to reach for it in New Zealand. Based on average monthly sea temperatures, MEGA Cool is the pick from May through December at Ahipara, Muriwai, Piha and Mount Maunganui. Raglan runs Cool from April to December, with August dipping into Cold. In Gisborne it's January, April to June and October to December; in Taranaki, January, March to June, and November and December. Wellington's Lyall Bay is Cool from December to April and Christchurch from January to March, with Cold taking over for the rest of the year.

On the road. San Diego from October to June, Bells Beach and Torquay from November to May, Bondi from July to October, and Margaret River from July to November.

Rub it on over Sticky Johnson Deluxe Basecoat, comb it before each surf and top it up as you go. When your local break warms past 20°C, strip it back and step up to MEGA Johnson 2.0 Warm. Between sessions, store your board out of the sun so the wax keeps its shape. Made in New Zealand.

What water temperature is MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cool for?

15–20°C (59–68°F), as it says on the box. Under 15°C, go to MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cold. At 20°C and up, MEGA Johnson 2.0 Warm is the firmer match.

What's the difference between Deluxe and MEGA 2.0?

Deluxe beads up really well for long-lasting grip. MEGA is our most tacky wax, and MEGA 2.0 is the super tacky version. Both go on over Deluxe Basecoat, so pick the line you like and the grade that matches your water temperature.

Is MEGA Cool OK in cold water?

It's made for 15–20°C. If your water averages under 15°C, MEGA Johnson 2.0 Cold is the softer, tackier match for those sessions.

Can I layer Cool over Warm or Cold?

Best not. Mixing top coat grades can leave uneven grip. When the season changes, strip the old wax, lay down fresh basecoat and start again with the new grade.

How often should I re-wax?

Comb and add a thin coat before each session. Do a full strip and re-wax every 2–3 months, or sooner if the wax looks grey, flat or has lost its bumps.

Well, it's actually a secret recipe developed over the last 20 years! We can't give away trade secrets but all we can say is it is chemically inert, making it reef safe, made from non-toxic natural minerals, and the world's best surfers have tested it in every condition and think it's the business.

Do I need to use a basecoat before applying surf wax?

A basecoat is highly recommended. Basecoat is a harder wax applied first to create a layer of textured bumps that your temperature-specific top coat grips onto. Without it, your top coat can slide around and wear off faster. Apply Sticky Johnson Basecoat in a crosshatch pattern first, then layer your Cool or Cold wax on top for maximum grip.
