Description

Sticky Johnson Deluxe Warm is our surf wax for water between 20 and 24°C (68–75°F). Long-lasting and super grippy, it beads up nicely as you apply it and stays put through long summer sessions once the water warms up.

Warm is a step firmer than Cool. As the water temperature climbs, a softer wax starts to smear and lose its shape, so a firmer formula holds its bumps and its grip. Pick the grade that matches the water and the wax does its job.

Where and when in New Zealand. Warm is a summer wax here. Going by average monthly sea temperatures, Northland (Ahipara), the Auckland west coast (Muriwai and Piha) and the Bay of Plenty (Mount Maunganui) are Warm water from January to April. Raglan is Warm from January to March, Gisborne in February and March, and Taranaki in February. Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin don't average 20°C in any month, so stick with Cool or Cold down there.

Further afield. Warm covers Bondi from November to January and again from April to June, Margaret River from December to June, and the Gold Coast from June to October. In the States it suits Cocoa Beach in Florida from December to April, San Diego and New Jersey from July to September, and North Carolina's Outer Banks from June to August and again in October.

Put down Sticky Johnson Deluxe Basecoat first, then layer Warm over the top. When the water cools off up north around May, strip it back and switch to Cool. Made in New Zealand.

What water temperature is Deluxe Warm for?

20–24°C (68–75°F). Under 20°C, go to Deluxe Cool. At 24°C and up, Deluxe Tropical is the firmer choice.

When should I switch to Warm wax in New Zealand?

At the northern breaks, the water averages 20°C or more from January to April. Switch for summer, then go back to Cool around May. Strip the old wax when you change grades rather than layering one over the other.

Can I use Warm wax in cold water?

It'll go on, but it won't grip well. Warm is made for higher temperatures and won't soften enough to stay tacky in cold water, so match your wax to the water.

Do I still need a basecoat?

On a hard board, yes. Basecoat builds the bumps your top coat grips onto, so the top coat lasts longer and doesn't slide around.

What's the difference between Deluxe and MEGA 2.0?

Deluxe beads up really well for long-lasting grip. MEGA is our most tacky wax, and MEGA 2.0 is the super tacky version. Both go on over Deluxe Basecoat, so pick the line you like and the grade that matches your water temperature.

Do I need to use a basecoat before applying surf wax?

A basecoat is highly recommended. Basecoat is a harder wax applied first to create a layer of textured bumps that your temperature-specific top coat grips onto. Without it, your top coat can slide around and wear off faster. Apply Sticky Johnson Basecoat in a crosshatch pattern first, then layer your Cool or Cold wax on top for maximum grip.
