MEGA Johnson 2.0 Tropical is the super tacky version of MEGA, our most tacky wax. It's a top coat for water 24°C (75°F) and up, made to give you a tacky surface that keeps its grip on your next warm-water trip.

Tropical is the firmest of the four MEGA Johnson 2.0 grades, so it keeps its bumps in warm water where a softer wax would turn to mush, while staying tacky under your feet.

Where you'll need it. Not at home, as it turns out. None of the New Zealand breaks on our chart average 24°C in any month. Northland and the Auckland west coast top out at around 21°C, which is MEGA Johnson 2.0 Warm water. Tropical is the one to pack for the trip.

Based on average monthly sea temperatures, it suits Oahu's North Shore all year round, the Gold Coast from November to May, Cocoa Beach in Florida from May to November, Bondi in February and March, and North Carolina's Outer Banks in September. They're monthly averages, so check the water when you get there and wax to suit.

Do your basecoat before you fly, then put MEGA Tropical on when you arrive. Keep the board in the shade between surfs, and comb and top up before each session.

Coming home? Strip the Tropical off before your first session back in New Zealand water, then lay down fresh basecoat and the grade that suits your local break: Warm in summer up north, and Cool or Cold for the rest of the year and further south. A clean deck grips more evenly than two grades layered together. Made in New Zealand.

What water temperature is MEGA Johnson 2.0 Tropical for?

24°C (75°F) and up. Between 20 and 24°C (68–75°F), MEGA Johnson 2.0 Warm is the better match.

What's the difference between Deluxe and MEGA 2.0?

Deluxe beads up really well for long-lasting grip. MEGA is our most tacky wax, and MEGA 2.0 is the super tacky version. Both go on over Deluxe Basecoat, so pick the line you like and the grade that matches your water temperature.

Do I need Tropical in New Zealand?

Not usually. On our chart, even Northland and the Auckland west coast peak at about 21°C in February and March, which is Warm water. Tropical is for trips to places like Hawaii, the Gold Coast or Florida.

Will it melt in the heat?

It's the firmest MEGA Johnson 2.0 grade, made for warm water. Any wax can still soften in a hot car or full sun, so keep your board in the shade or in a reflective board bag.

Can I put Tropical straight over my Warm wax?

Best not. Start from a clean deck: strip the old wax, lay down fresh basecoat, then apply Tropical.

Do I need to use a basecoat before applying surf wax?

A basecoat is highly recommended. Basecoat is a harder wax applied first to create a layer of textured bumps that your temperature-specific top coat grips onto. Without it, your top coat can slide around and wear off faster. Apply Sticky Johnson Basecoat in a crosshatch pattern first, then layer your Cool or Cold wax on top for maximum grip.
