The strongest one is the one you can turn up. How strong a freshener smells depends on its format and how much fragrance it holds. With the Sticky Johnson refillable you choose: 5 ml (half a vial) for a mellow scent, the full 10 ml for a big hit, and a top-up whenever it fades.

It depends on what you want. If you'd rather not keep buying new ones, pick a refillable: Sticky Johnson's is made in New Zealand with NZ sheep's wool, comes with a 10 ml vial of surf wax fragrance and tops up in seconds. For a cheap stocking stuffer, our classic, Tuatara and Surfboard hangers do the job.

Clean first, scent second. Vacuum the seats and mats, wipe down the dash, get rid of food wrappers, and dry out anything damp (wet wetsuits and towels are the usual culprits). Then air the car out and add a light scent. That new-car smell comes from brand-new materials and fades for good, so a clean car with a fresh scent is the closest you'll get.
